MetLife Foundation Ambassadors In Education Awards Recognizes
St. Louis Principal Alice Roach for her leadership in connecting
school and community
Surrounded by community
members, educators, administrators, high school students and others
on a bright May morning, Dr. Alice Roach received a crystal apple
and oversized check for $5,000 from the MetLife Foundation for her
leadership in engaging the whole community to turn a troubled middle
school into the Carnahan High School of the Future. This new-concept
technology-enhanced school is named for the late Governor Mel Carnahan.
Carnahan High School offers dual academic tracks, college preparatory
and technology, and complements both tracks with internship opportunities.
&nb sp;"Under Dr. Roach's guidance, attendance has soared
to 95% and student achievement is on the rise. Community members
now offer praise and support, " said one of her nominators.
"Dr. Roach
counseled rather than punished, coached rather
than scolded, and effectively raised the level of student, parent
and community involvement." Dr. Roach is one of 25 Ambassadors
In Education honored this year.
All-America Cities Opportunity
A resource is now available
to All-America Cities to conduct community-wide dialogues. Through
a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the National Civic League
is pleased to make available a DVD and dialogue guide and capacity-building
assistance to assist All-America Cities to have conversations on
issues of race, diversity and social justice. We ask that the dialogues
involve youth and youth-serving agencies. The DVD set and dialogue
guide are entitled, Race: The Power of an Illusion, a PBS documentary
produced by California Newsreel. We are pleased to be providing
this kind of assistance to All-America Cities across the country.
Only a limited number of DVDs are available. Reserve yours today
